Question

#55 Which one of the appropriate structure for the Diels-Alder reaction

Answer

Step 1

To participate in Diels-Alder reaction, the conjugated double bonds in diene must be in a cis-position. The double bonds in diene A are in cis-position. Therefore, it can readily react in Diels-Alder reaction. But, the double bonds in the second conjugated diene B are in trans-position and they are restricted by the structure of the compound to come to a cis-position.

Therefore, it cannot react in Diels-Alder reaction.

Thus, A reacts readily in Diels-Alder reaction but B cannot participate in it.
