Carbohydrates possesses handedness exists in two forms left-handed form and a right-handed form. Mirror image is the reflection of an object in the mirror. There are two classes of mirror images: superimposable mirror images are images that coincide at all points, nonsuperimposable mirror images are images where not all points coincide. A chiral center is an atom in a molecule that has four different functional groups bounded to it in a tetrahedral orientation.

(a)
The molecule does not possess a chiral center. No carbon in the molecule will bound to four different functional groups.

(b)
The molecule possesses a chiral center. Carbon – 3 of the molecule will bind to four different groups (H, OH, CH3, CH2).

(c)
The molecule possesses a chiral center. Carbon – 3 of the molecule will bind to four different groups (H, OH, CH3, CH).

(d)
The molecule does not possess a chiral center. No carbon in the molecule will bound to four different functional groups.
