I worked in a manufacturing unit for infant food and I experienced all these five signs of organizational culture.
Definition of Mission
This is among an organization's most important feature that illustrates its mission and stated aim. In a food industry, and that too an infant food manufacturer, the mission can not be other than to provide the recipient with safe and hygienic food.
The company for which I worked had a specific kind of mission statement that was appropriate in some way, which followed in line with the procedures. This was also important because the organization underwent regular quality audits and mission statement in the protocols is a must.
Language and Tales
In this area of corporate culture this company did not really excell. The instructions and appreciations were relatively straight-forward and to the point. The managers didn't weave the stories while recognizing team members' meetings and contributions. The message to the employees came from an arrogant entity that was only concerned about its target and ruthless in its work.
Fitness style
The company had a physical structure which was very professionally planned. It was in line with manufacturing cycle and followed guidelines on food safety and good business practices (GMP). Also, the offices were designed and managed with the corporate culture in mind.
Rules & Regulations
The organization had a set of rules and policies which its employees should obey. However, the company being a family-owned business and of limited size, the rules will be applied on the basis of necessity and the owners' whims and fancies. There was a great deal of flexibility in applying laws, which would rely on convenience. It was the organization's biggest weakness. The employees understood nothing was fixed and any regulations or procedures could be changed at any time according to the discretion of the management.
Rites
Particularly birthday celebrations for the owner and family members were regularly followed by certain rituals. Annual award functions for philanthropy were also organized, where poets and artists were awarded cash and citations. The company also organized annual picnics which provided an opportunity for employees and their families to mingle and exchange pleasantries.
