Assignment 1 - What does it mean to be an effective manager in a diverse workplace?Step 1: Identify what YOU consider is important in management work
- What tasks should managers be doing?
- How should they be doing these tasks?
- How should managers be engaging with a diverse workforce?
- What personal attributes should managers have in order to be effective?
- What skills do managers need to acknowledge ethical, cultural, social, and team issues?
Read and make notes on the key points made in the article by Hartman and McCambridge (2011). Use headings to categorise your thoughts. Consider if you agree/disagree with the following statements by Hartman and McCambridge. Think about why you agree or disagree.
‘Stereotypical views of millennials characterize them as technologically sophisticated multi-taskers, capable of significant contributions to tomorrow’s organisations, yet deficient in communication skills’ (Hartman & McCambridge 2011, p. 22).
‘That human nature, that is to say, our human nature is much more created than it is discovered. We design human nature by designing the institutions within which people live and work’ (Schwartz 2014).
Step 3: Read & Watch
- Read the article “Optimizing Millennials’ Communication Styles” from the reading list.
- Watch ‘The way we think about work is broken’ (Schwartz 2014) Ted Talk
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B_1itqCKHo ^
- Do different generations communicate in different ways? If so, in what ways should managers communicate with different generations to make work satisfying?
- Besides communication skills, how else can effective managers make work satisfying for their employees?
Now, you can begin finding academic articles on diversity in the workplace. The articles can help you define diversity and understand the implications it has for both staff and - critically - managers.
Step 4: Provide evidence to support your responses (above)
So far you have written your thoughts about what you have read and viewed. You now need to find three (or more) journal articles from credible, peer-reviewed academic sources which provide evidence/support the main ideas you have determined from reading/viewing Hartman and Schwartz.
The articles must be current (between 2009-2019). Read the three articles, take notes or mark up the articles to identify the key points. Next, apply theory from those articles to support the answers you wrote to the above questions. Summarise insights and evaluate their relevance to modern workplace environments.

Step 5: Write your response
Compose your essay.
- Write an introduction (describe the purpose of the essay and the main points you will be covering);
- Compose 3-4 body paragraphs (minimum 100 words each); and,
- Write a conclusion (what is the 'take away' message).
- The document must be typed in MS Word using in an appropriate font, e.g. Times New Roman, Helvetica, Cambria or Arial (size 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing and left aligned).
This paragraph introduces the purpose of your analytical essay: your evidence-based view of what is important about managerial effectiveness in diverse workplaces. Within the introductory paragraph you will need to: introduce the topic of the paper; and, foreground or signpost key topics you will address in subsequent paragraphs of this essay.
How do I write body paragraphs?
Each paragraph has one main point or topic. A good paragraph needs a clear topic sentence to state the purpose of this paragraph. Then you will write 3-4 sentences elaborating on that point using citations (in-text references) to attribute ideas to journal articles you read. Your analysis should demonstrate critical thinking based on research, not just your opinion. This is a very short essay so please summarise ideas from journal articles rather than using quotations. One way to structure your body paragraphs might be:
- Para 1: Comment on the Hartman article using the support of journal article evidence
- Para 2: Comment on the Shwartz using the support of journal article evidence
- Para 3: Consider ECST (ethical, social, cultural and team) issues using the support of journal article evidence
- Para 4: (optional if you have space) You can introduce a relevant topic related to diversity and/or efficient management practice (e.g., link to content from weeks 2, 3, 4) using the support of journal article evidence
The conclusion is not a restatement of the introduction. Instead, it must briefly summarise the key points in the body paragraphs and leave the reader with one clear take-away message.
What about references?
See further instruction below. Reference lists don't count towards word limits, but in-text citations do.
Word limit 750 words +/- 10% (excluding reference list).
