For thin film flow, the critical slope is defined as:
Sc = (g*n2)/(yc)1/3
where:
g = gravity = 9.81 m/s²
n = 0.015
yc = critical depth
Rearranging the equation:
yc = [(g*n2)/Sc]3
substituting in values and solving:
yc = [(9.81*0.015²)/0.004]3 --> yc
Next note the critical velocity is found by the following relationship:
(Vc2/g) = (Ac/Tc) --> Vc = sqrt[(Ac/Tc)*g]
where:
Tc = the top width = b
Ac = flow area = b*yc = 0.168*b
Vc = critical velocity
substituting in values and solving:
Vc = sqrt[(0.168*b/b)*9.81] = sqrt(0.168*9.81) --> Vc = 1.284 m/s
