Q1: CASE 20 'Innocent Comment?'
Jack Strong is seated between Tom Evans and Judy Hanson at a dinner meeting of a local industrial engineering society. Jack and Judy have an extended discussion of a variety of concerns, many of which are related to their common engineering interests. At the conclusion of the dinner, Jack turns to Tom, smiles, and says, "I'm sorry not to have talked with you more tonight, Tom, but Judy's better looking than you."
Judy is taken aback by Jack's comment. A recent graduate from a school in which more than 20 percent of her classmates were women, she had been led to believe that finally the stereotypical view that women are not as well suited for engineering as men were finally going away. However, her first job has raised some doubts about this. She was hired into a division in which she is the only woman engineer. Now, even after nearly 1 year on the job, she has to struggle to get others to take her ideas seriously. She wants to be recognized first and foremost as a good engineer.
So, she had enjoyed talking shop with Jack. But she was stunned by his remark to Tom, however, innocently it might have been intended. Suddenly, she saw the conversation in a very different light. Once again, she sensed that she was not being taken seriously enough as an engineer.
a. How should Judy respond to Jack's remark?
b. Should she say anything?
c. Assuming Tom understands her perspective, what, if anything, should he say or do?
Q2: John is representing his company in a country where corruption is widespread. A contractor offers him a bribe. If John does not accept the bribe, the contractor will still offer it to someone else who has more power/influence. If he accepts the bribe, he will do something illegal or at least violate his own conscience. The donation strategy sometimes offers a middle solution. Instead of accepting the bribe, John can direct it to a charity.
• Is it still a bribe? Analyze your answer

1 (a). The comment made by Jack on appearance and looks is definitely not acceptable and is inappropriate, but Judy wants to be first and foremost recognized as an Engineer must be least bothered about the discriminatory comment but also if she does not respond to such comments, it would promote the behavior of Jack.
So, Judy should respond to Jack that making such comments would not be encouraged under any circumstances and explain to Jack that " A Persons work and his Moral grounds should be taken criteria to Talk or conduct any alliances rather than his appearances", this is the sole morality one should follow.
(b). Yes, She should explain to Jack that he made a mistake and should always care about what one speaks although it was intended from Jacks's side, it was not correct.
(c). Yes, Definitely Tom should also remark and explain to Jack about his inappropriate comments and his sayings, commenting on anyone's facial appearance is not good but a person should always be identified from his works and abilities.
2. Yes, the money taken for any illegal work even if it is utilized for good deeds like charity is always termed as Bribe and should not be practiced. The contractor may get the work done from any other person, but if John accepts the amount, he will be a partner in crime and may be held responsible for his doings, and it may result in causing a threat to the public or any individual directly or indirectly, hence he should never accept the bribe or illegal money. The charity work should always be done using hard-earned money and with a good perspective, if a charity is done with money earned from wrong deeds, the person is committing sin by indulging all the innocent's life who will utilize that money.
A bribe always marks a wrong or threat to innocents life and hence must be stopped using a chain of thoughts and moral teachings.
